The government stopped IAF from crossing the LoC during 1993 Kargil war
New Delhi, Jul 20 (IBNS): The Indian Air Force was ready to bomb strategic targets inside Pakistan during the 1993 Kargil war but the then NDA government, led by former PM Atal Bihari Bajpayee did not agree to the ideas, saying India will not cross the Line of Control (Loc), according to media reports on Wednesday.
The Cabinet Committee on security had, at that time, instructed the then Air Chief Marshall AY Tipnis that IAF fighter jets must not cross the LoC under any circumstances, media reported.
NDTV reported that these plans, laid out in documents of the Indian Air Force accessed exclusively by the news channel, "show that fighter pilots were minutes away from crossing the Line of Control or de facto border in Kashmir on bombing missions, a move which would have likely escalated the controlled Kargil conflict into a full-fledged war between the nuclear-armed neighbours."
