TMC demands removal of Bengal Guv; BJP says Raj Bhawan saving Indian Constitution

Kolkata/UNI: Five members of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Parliamentary Party on Wednesday sent a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking immediate removal of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over his 'failure to defend the Constitution'.

TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, MP Derek O'Brien, MP Kalyan Banerjee and MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar have sent signatories in the memorandum to the President, demanding the removal of the Governor.

The memorandum read, "We submit that the Governor has failed to preserve, protect, defend the Constitution, and repeatedly breached law declared by the Supreme Court."

Accusing the Governor of refusing to sign several Bills, the Parliament members said, "He is sitting tight and refuses to sign several Bills passed by the West Bengal Legislative Assembly."

Addressing a media conference at party headquarters here, MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said they have mailed a signed memorandum to the President, requesting him to recall the present Governor, who has been "accused of meddling with the state administration and violating the Constitution".

"The Governor is not following the Constitution and has been interfering with the state administration. He is also encouraging the opposition parties and following the directives of New Delhi," Roy alleged.

He said the previous Governors in the state had excelled in their fields and great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Gopal Krishna Gandhi had also served the state with efficiency.

However, since the present Governor took office in July 2019, he began all sorts of alleged wild allegations against the state administration, as well as police administration by using social media, press briefings and often media conferences alleged the TMC MP.

Roy said the present Governor's activity was unprecedented and against the spirit of Indian democracy and Constitution.

He said though the Governor is head of the administration, he must do the job in consultation with the state Cabinet. But here the Governor was going the beyond his jurisdiction and carrying out the order of the "Shahenshah" of New Delhi.

The Governor was also accused of encouraging the opposition agenda against the ruling government.

Roy said they have submitted a 6-page memorandum to the President, demanding the removal of the state Governor immediately.

The Raj Bhawan and Nabanna, the State Secretariat, have been at loggerheads for long and this acidic relation reached its peak on Wednesday when the ruling party demanded his removal immediately.

Meanwhile, BJP's national secretary and in-charge of West Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya said the ruling party has been violating the Indian Constitution almost every day and it was the Governor, who had been trying to hold the Constitution so that the administration was not politicised as well as criminalised.

He charged the TMC with violating all the democratic norms and asked whether the present Governor needed a clean certificate from a party which was almost everyday violating Indian Constitution.

Vijayvargiya also said as per his opinion the submission of the memorandum to the President, demanding the removal of the Governor would not be effective as the track record of the TMC was known.
