Two injured in IED blast in Meghalaya's Shillong

Guwahati/IBNS: At least two people including a woman were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Meghalaya's capital city Shillong on Tuesday evening.

The IED went off behind a busy market place in the Laitumkhrah area around 1-30 pm.

Two persons including a woman were injured in the blast and they were rushed to hospital.

Following the blast, police and other security personnel have rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.

Meanwhile, militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for the blast.

East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) S Nongtynger said that, during preliminary investigation, it was confirmed that an IED went off in the area.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has strongly condemned the blast.

Conrad Sangma tweeted - "Strongly condemn the IED blast reported in Laitumkhrah earlier this afternoon that has injured two citizens. Home Minister, @LahkmenR & officials of @MeghalayaPolice have apprised me on the matter and further investigation is being carried out."
