Kolkata: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought a report from Jadavpur University (JU) over the mysterious death of a first-year undergraduate student.

It is also expected to send a team of officials to probe the death of Swapnadip Kundu.

The city police had already arrested three suspects, including the prime accused Sourab Chowdhry, and also summoned six others related to the crime, which rocked the educational circle across the country.

Eighteen-year-old Kundu, a college student from Bugulia in Nadia district fatally fell from the hostel's second floor on Wednesday night, his 3rd day in the campus, and succumbed to his multiple wounds the following morning at the KPC Hospital.

He was almost clothless when he fell on the ground floor of the hostel campus.

Kolkata Police on Sunday arrested Deepshekhar Dutta, a 2nd year economics student and Manotosh Ghosh, also a second-year sociology student, for their alleged role in the death of Bengali honours Swapnadip Kundu.

The trio was now under police custody following a local court order.

Chowdhury used to stay in the hostel and one of the members of the mess committee, which virtually dictates allotment of the hostel facility for the first-year students.

An UGC team from the anti-ragging cell is expected to arrive on Wednesday and JU to make an on-the-spot investigation into the mysterious death of Kundu.

The team will also meet the JU authority and talk to the students to know about the incident that lead to premature death of the teenager.

The UGC has reportedly received several complaints regarding the alleged mismanagement of the institution, including ragging, which is banned by a Supreme court order.

Netizens and scores of former students of JU on social media exposing the ' mismanagement' of the ' unspeakable ragging' of the seniors on the new entrants.

The West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR), which already visited Bogulia in Nadia and talked to the aggrieved parents, said the prima facie is of the view that the unnatural death of the teenager is dealt under the provisions of POCSO, Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act, which was passed by the Parliament in the year 2012.
