Unnao rape case: CBI gets 15-day extension for probe

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted the Central Bureau of Investigation, 15 days more time to investigate the July 28 car crash, which left the Unnao rape survivor and her advocate seriously-injured, and killed two of her aunts.

The survivor, her two aunts and the lawyer were seriously injured on July 28 after a truck rammed into their vehicle on her way from Unnao to Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. While her aunts succumbed to their injuries, the victim was admitted to a hospital in Lucknow and later shifted to AIIMS, Delhi, for treatment.

Appearing for the CBI, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta contended before the two-Judge bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Anirudh Basu that the agency could not record the statement of lawyer Mahendra Singh, since he was still unconscious.

Accepting Mehta's request, the bench postponed the next hearing to October in the sensational case in which four-time Bangarmau MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his associates have been indicted for rape.
