Uphaar fire tragedy: Supreme Court rejects curative plea, declines to reopen case
New Delhi/IBNS: Declining to reopen the case, the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a curative plea filed against the Ansal brothers, the owners of Uphaar Cinema where 59 people had died in a fire two decades ago, media reports said.
A bench of Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde and Justices NV Ramana and Arun Mishra rejected the curative plea.
The judgement came as a relief for the Ansal brothers, Sushil and Gopal Ansal, who had earlier escaped the enhancement of further jail term in connection with the case.
On June 13, 1997, 59 people were killed in a fire which broke out in Uphaar Cinema at Green Park, Delhi, during the screening of Hindi film 'Border'.
With a 2:1 majority verdict, the Supreme Court on Feb 9, 2017, had given relief to Sushil Ansal based on the sentence he had already served and his old age and ailment.
However, the top court had asked Gopal Ansal to serve the remaining one-year jail term.
