Vandalism at Bengali poet Srijato's event in Assam’s Silchar town

Guwahati, Jan 13 (IBNS): Right-wing activists on Saturday night ransacked a hotel in Assam’s Silchar town where Bengali poet Srijato Bandopadhyay was invited as a guest of honour at an event.

According to reports, Srijato arrived at Silchar to attend a programme titled “Aesho Boli’, a symposium for writing and sketch for the youths.

A large number of the right-wing activists gathered at Hotel Riya Palace in Silchar town and protested against the invitation to Srijato.

The Right-wing activists shouted slogans against the poet and some of them pelted stones at the hotel where the programme was organised.

The protesters disrupted the programme attend by the poet.

When the situation turned violent, police and CRPF personnel were deployed to control the situation.

Security personnel, led by the additional superintendent of police of Cachar district escorted Srijato and took him out from the hotel.

An activist said "Trinamool Congress agent" Srijato had come to "disrupt the brotherhood and bonds of Bengalis and Assamese".

“In his series of poem, Srijato used some words, which insults the Hindu Gods and also hurt religious sentiments. We can’t allow such type of person to attend any programme here,” Gautam Chakraborty, a protester said.

Gautam said anti-Hindus had sent Srijato to create a disturbances in Assam.
