Villagers rush in to loot banned currency dumped in field
The dumped notes, most in denomination of Rs 500, were packed in a gunny bag.
The incident took place in Bhagwanpur market areas under Baikunthpur police station in Gopalganj district—home district of RJD president Lalu Prasad and wife Rabri Devi.
Reports quoting local media said some children were playing on Thursday afternoon when they came across an abandoned bag lying there .
“Some children tore apart the bag out of curiosity and were startled to see the Rs 500 notes stashed inside. Instantly, there was a mad scramble among them to loot the notes,” witnesses said.
Reports said many villagers also rushed to the spot to lay their hands on the notes when they got the news.
By the time the police reached the spot, they could collect notes amounting to around Rs 15,000. Friday is the last date of depositing banned currency notes.
District magistrate Rahul Kumar has asked the banks to question the villagers coming to deposit banned notes, according to media reports.
