WB: Cops, journalists, protesters injured during BJP's law violation in North Dinajpur

Kolkata, Dec 21 (IBNS): Few policemen, supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and at least two journalists were injured during a law violation programme at Raiganj in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district on Monday, reports said.

Protesting against the deteriorating law and order situation and misrule in the state, the BJP held a law violation programme at Raiganj.

Protesters were  engaged in a clash with the police and tried to break barricades.

Protesters allegedly threw bricks, stones and bombs aiming at the police force. Police restored to lathicharged, lobbed tear gas shells, fired rubber bullets and used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

Few protesters including BJP leader Ritesh Tiwari and party's North Dinajpur district president Subhra Roy Chowdury were injured in the clash.

BJP leader Ritesh Tiwari told IBNS, "We were hosting the law violation programme there very peacefully. Police suddenly started unprovoked lathicharge. A huge number of our supporters were injured and are being treated in Raiganj hospital and 17 of them are in critical stage. Police hit on my head with stick. Few round bullets were also fired from police's side. Our one supporter, sustaining bullet injury, has been admitted in hospital."

However, denying the allegation one senior official of North Dinajpur district police told IBNS, "To disperse the protesters, who were throwing bricks, stones and bombs aiming at us. We lathicharged them, lobbed tear gas shells and used water canon. Few policemen was seriously injured in the clash."

Meanwhile, BJP supporters held another law violation programme at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, in the presence of party's state president Dilip Ghosh and BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya on Monday.

Protesters allegedly threw bricks aiming at the police force as the cops restored to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

BJP supporters also clashed with the police at Balurghat in West Bengal's South Dinajpur district on Monday during a law violation programme. Police lathicharged the protesters to bring the situation under control.

The BJP also held law violation programme at Alipore area in Kolkata on Monday and engaged in a scuffle with the police.

"Our protest against the deteriorating law and order situation and misrule in the state will be continued and strengthened in upcoming days," BJP's state president Dilip Ghosh told IBNS.
