Bengaluru: Rahul Gandhi, who has turned down the offer to be the Congress president, will be pursued to lead as he is the only party leader who has a national presence, senior Congress leader M Mallikarjun Kharge has said, media reported.

The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said the ideal leader to lead a party like Congress should enjoy support from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and West Bengal to Gujarat.

The aspiring leader to head the grand old party should be accepted by the entire Congress and should be well-recognized, he said, according to a report in the media and added that there wasn't a single person other than Rahul Gandhi, who had all these attributes.

Earlier, he said, the Congress leaders had "forced" Sonia Gandhi to join and work for the party and requested Rahul Gandhi to come and fight for the party.

Kharge said Congress has no alternative to Rahul Gandhi as he alone enjoys the stature of a national leader.

Even as Rahul Gandhi continues to be unwilling to take up the mantle, Kharge said he would be requested to lead the party "for the sake of the party, for the sake of the country, for fighting the RSS-BJP and to keep the country united", according to the report.

Kharge said that the Congress party would ask him, force him, request him to return as the Congress president. The party will pursue him and stand by him, he added.

Rahul Gandhi resigned as Congress president after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in Parliamentary elections in 2019.
