Kolkata, Sept 1 (IBNS): BJP MP Arjun Singh on Sunday alleged that the police resorted to lathi-charge at Kankinara in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district to lift a road blockade, leaving him injured.

Arjun Singh, who had joined the BJP before the Lok Sabha polls from the TMC and won the polls, said the police worked like puppets of state CM Mamata Banerjee.

"Working like puppets of @MamataOfficial  Barrackpore police and Mr. Ajay Thakur - DC, Zone-I,Barrackpore Police Commissionerate did lathi charge, I have been severely injured in the same and MLA of Bhatpara Pawan singh has been injured as well  #tmc is murdering democracy in bengal," Singh tweeted.

Singh was taken to a hospital in Kolkata for treatment.

Targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress, Singh said: "Today @MamataOfficial ordered her goons to first hijack #BJP office in my district and when I reached the spot they attacked me, Destroyed my car and injured the driver. Police is a mute spectator, law and order is in tatters in #WestBengal."

A senior police officer, however, claimed that stones were being hurled during a clash between two groups at Kankinara and Singh suffered injuries in the melee, reported News 18.

West Bengal has witnessed violence both before and after the Lok Sabha polls where the main battle was between state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and the BJP.

According to reports, conflict began on Sunday morning after the TMC and the BJP workers clashed over the issue of taking control of a party office in Shyamnagar area. Singh alleged that his vehicle was vandalised by TMC workers.

The BJP workers protested against the incident by blocking the road in Barrackpore.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukul Roy condemned the incident and tweeted: "Condemn the brutal planned attack on Shri @ArjunsinghWB."

He is critically injured. Law and order has completely collapsed in West Bengal and there is an illegal partnership between ruling party and state police."

Roy said he briefed PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue.

"The state Police is trying to cover up the actual details of the incident, I am demanding a CBI enquiry about this needless violence on an esteemed politician," he tweeted.

State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh posted: "The underhand tactics adopted by TMC to counter the increasing popularity of BJP include not only occupying the BJP office forcibly but also conspiracy to murder @ArjunsinghWB Is this how TMC intends to practice democracy?is it the way to stop the spread of BJP in Paschim Banga?."

West Bengal Police said police were injured during Sunday's incident.

" Today some hooligans led by Arjun Singh, MP and his MLA son forcibly blocked road in Jagaddal area of Barrackpore. CP along with other officers requested him not to cause inconvenience to general public," the police tweeted.

Police said bomb was thrown targeting the police from the house of Singh.

"He didn’t listen and provoked his supporters to attack police. Several policemen including the Commissioner are injured in the attack by hooligans. A pistol has been snatched and a bomb was thrown aiming at police from the roof of the house of Arjun Singh," the police tweeted.

Police said Singh was injured by the brick which was thrown by his supporter.

" The MP also got injury on head by a brick thrown by his supporters. Police has brought situation under control," the police said.

The BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in Barrackpore beginning 6 am on Monday.
