What is UP govt hiding, asks Cong after Rahul, Priyanka stopped from travelling to Meerut

| @indiablooms | Dec 24, 2019, at 09:30 pm

New Delhi, Dec 24 (UNI) The Congress on Tuesday asked what is the Uttar Pradesh government trying to hide by stopping former party president Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from travelling Meerut to meet the families of deceased persons, who were killed in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest.

"The question is what is the government of Uttar Pradesh trying to hide by preventing two top Opposition leaders from meeting the victims' family", asked former MP and senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, who had also accompanied the Gandhis.

Earlier in the day, the Uttar Pradesh administration had stopped Rahul and Priyanka from entering Meerut at the outskirts of the city, citing the imposition of Section 144.

"For the first time, police have accepted that 18 persons have died. Rahul ji and Priyanka ji were only going to wipe the tears of the victims. But, they denied permission and we returned," he said.

He also pointed out that Priyanka went to Bijnor a few days ago and met people there. She did not do any political activity and no one stopped her, he added.

"What has changed it now to stop them from travelling Meerut?" Tiwari asked.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Rajasthan Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had condemned the Yogi Adityanath government.
