'Will defeat Mamata in Nandigram by 50,000 votes or quit politics': Suvendu Adhikari after Bengal CM announces candidature

Kolkata/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said he would defeat Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram by 50,000 votes or quit politics, hours after the West Bengal Chief Minister surprised all by announcing her candidature for the 2021 assembly polls.

"Will defeat the Honourable CM by half-a-lakh votes or quit politics," Adhikari thundered from a violence-marred south Kolkata rally.

However, Adhikari, a former Trinamool strongman who rose to prominence leading 2007 Nandigram land movement, did not clarify whether he would personally fight the elections from the Medinipur seat.

Surprising all with more than two months left for the state polls, Banerjee at a rally in Nandigram, which is the bastion of the Adhikari family, on Monday announced she would contest from the constituency in the upcoming 2021 assembly elections.

Addressing a rally in Nandigram, Banerjee said, "I would request Subrata Bakshi to allow me to contest from Nandigram."

Bakshi, who is the state president of the Trinamool, immediately accepted Banerjee's proposal and announced her candidature.

Banerjee might also fight from her current constituency Bhawanipore for a second seat.

"I might also fight from Bhawanipore. But it is sure I will be fighting from Nandigram," the Trinamool Congress supremo said.

The Nandigram land movement also gave a dividend to Banerjee's political journey helping her Trinamool to oust the Left Front government in 2011.
