Arshinagar is an entertainer, not a dark film: Dev

Kolkata, Dec 28 (IBNS) As Arshinagar by Aparna Sen grabs eyeball at plexes and theatres this Christmas-New Year season, the film's protagonist superstar Dev says the film is closer to the genre of a popular entertainer.
"Arshinagar has every element to entertain the holidaying crowd. It is not a dark film. It is a sweet romance, it's a tragedy, an entertainer which will be appreciated by our audiences," Dev tells IBNS here.

Recalling how apprehensive he was about speaking verse-dipped lines in Bengali, Dev says, "You know my Bangla is not so 'sudh'. And Rinadi (Aparna Sen) wanted me to mouth certain lines in a certain way. I goofed up several times initially."

"However it was hard work and fun at the same time and we worked to perfect the diction for over three months," Dev says adding the film is different from other Indian works inspired by Shakespearean works on Romeo and Juliet because it was an Aparna Sen film.

"Throughout my career I had always wanted to be part of Rinadi's projects. And this was happening now as I am doing a number of different films which started with Chander Pahar and then Buno Hans and now Arshinagar. I am very enthused about Koushik Ganguly's Dhumketu as well."

"She treated me like a son," Dev, who is Rano (a.k.a Romeo in the film) recalls about working with Aparna Sen.

Ritika Sen, who plays Julie (Juliet), can't hide her excitement for getting the dream character in an Aparna Sen film.

"Every actress dreams to be a Juliet once in her career. It's been a huge journey for me," she says.

Asked if she felt intimidated by Dev during shoots, Ritika says despite being a superstar, Dev is very friendly and very helpful.

"He is a superb co-actor," Ritika says.

Dev interrupts saying, "Do you know she used to take break during shoots for gulping milk like a babe and we all waited," to which Ritika smiles: "Yes they all treated me like a kid. I was pampered by the director and everyone else."

Produced by Shri Venkatesh Films Arshinagar was premiered on Dec  24.
