Los Angeles:  Greta Gerwig’s neon-coated fantasy comedy 'Barbie' is emerging as a Box Office rockstar as it smashed an estimated $155 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters over the weekend.

The other big release of the week, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which is based on the life of  J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist who was pivotal in developing the first nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project, and thereby ushering in the Atomic Age, also shined at the Box Office as the movie collected $80.5 million on the opening weekend, as per figures reported by Variety magazine in its report.

Cillian Murphy is playing the character of Oppenheimer in the movie.

Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The fantasy movie is based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel.

It is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films.

The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Both movies drew rave reviews and are expected to fight each other in the upcoming Academy Awards race.
