Kaberi Antardhan will highlight my craft: Srabanti Chatterjee

Bengali actor Srabanti Chatterjee plays the lead in national award winning filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly's upcoming film Kaberi Antardhan, which is slated for Jan 20 release. IBNS correspondent Souvik Ghosh catches up with Srabanti for a candid chat ahead of the release...

Q. You definitely had a dream to work with ace filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly. What was your initial reaction to the offer?

A. I was very excited to work with him. Though I had a chance to work with him earlier, somehow for some reason it didn’t materialise on the big screens. I believe the right things will take place at the right time. I couldn’t resist myself from dancing upon receiving the offer (laughs).

Q. And the opportunity to work with him came as the lead actor!

A. I am lucky to be a part of the film as the protagonist. I am also excited to see Kaberi on the big-screen for the way my character has been sketched. It was a very challenging character for me.

Q. Your acting base was the commercial films but this film will certainly bring the best out of you in terms of acting.

A. Srabanti Chatterjee has earned her recognition through commercial films. But Kaberi Antardhan will give a glimpse of my love and passion for films.

Q. You have started featuring in content-driven films like Goynar Baksho, Buno Hansh from 2013-2014 when commercial films were the frontrunners. Do you think your choices at that point now stands vindicated considering the kind of films which are currently being made in the industry?

A. I was cast by the filmmakers at that point since they felt I could do the justice to the characters. However, I wanted filmmakers to think of me playing those types of roles more. It was not possible for me to approach the filmmakers seeking roles. Only my works could highlight my acting skills and craft. I feel Kaberi Antardhan will highlight my craft.

Q. How was the experience of sharing screen space with Prosenjit Chatterjee?

A. I had worked with Bumba-da and played his daughter’s role years ago. In Kaberi Antardhan, my character is completely different. I will be frank enough to say that I was extremely nervous to feature alongside him. I was feeling like a debutant even after being in the business for years.

Q. So, Kaberi Antardhan has fulfilled his bucket list.

A. Exactly. A lot of things have been achieved through this film. KG’s team has been very supportive while Bumba-da has remained like a guide for me.

Q. Was there any similarity between Srabanti and Kaberi?

A. The simplicity. Kaberi has simplicity and innocence. I could connect to those traits.

Q. It seems this film holds a huge value in terms of your career.

A. I consider this film as one of the best in my whole career. I am really hopeful of this film. I hope the audience will get to know me in a new way.
