Rajkummar Rao's Newton is India's official entry for Oscars

Mumbai, Sept 22 (IBNS): Director Amit V Masurkar and actor Rajkummar Rao's latest released movie Newton has been selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign language category at the Oscars, the Film Federation of India announced on Friday.

The movie hit the theatre on Friday.

Actor Rajkummar, who plays the lead in the political satire, also shared the news on his twitter page,  which coincides with the film’s commercial release.
“Very happy to share this news that #NEWTON is India's official entry to the #OSCARS this year. Congratulations team,” his tweet read.

“An eminent 14 member jury, constituted by Film Federation of India comprising an eclectic mix of film professionals from various crafts and languages under the astute chairmanship of eminent film personality CV Reddy selected the Hindi film Newton to represent India at the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film Category,” the FFI announcement on Twitter  read.

Produced by Drishyam Films and distributed by Eros Entertainment, the film also features Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav.

Meanwhile, Bollywood celebrities praised Rajkummar Rao for the achievement.

Actor Paresh Rawal tweeted: "Huge congrats to my favourite actor @RajkummarRao for Newton n hope you win the Oscar ! Good luck ."

Actor Anil Kapoor greeted the actor by saying: "Congratulations @RajkummarRao & the whole team of #Newton !! This is such great news! All the best!"

Actor Manoj Bajpayee said :"Congratulations @RajkummarRao @TripathiiPankaj @Amitmasurkar and the captain @ManMundra."

Filmmaker Aanand L Rai posted: "@RajkummarRao,you r d most precious actor we have in our industry.Thank u for being there unconditionally for stories to b told.#Newton22sep."

Actress Bhumi Pednekar tweeted: "Well deserved and congratulations team #Newton @RajkummarRao @Amit_Masurkar @ManMundra @cypplOfficial #PankajTripathi ."

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana‏ remarked: "#Newton is India's official entry to the #Oscars. Very deserving! Hail @aanandlrai sir, fab @RajkummarRao, genius @Amit_Masurkar @ManMundra."

Actress Dia Mirza congratulated Rao and posted: "So proud and happy for you all! More power to good stories. @aanandlrai @Amit_Masurkar @RajkummarRao #NEWTON."

Newton had its world premiere in the Forum section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.
