Soumitra Chatterjee to receive Legion d'Honneur, Mamata Banerjee wishes the veteran actor

Kolkata, June 10 (IBNS): Another feather in the cap of Indian cinema with veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee being conferred with the highest French civilian honour- the Legion d'Honneur.

The Indian actor will be getting the award 30 years after legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray had received it.

Soumitra Chatterjee, incidentally, has worked in several movies directed by Ray, such as  "Abhijan" (1962), "Charulata" (1964), "Aranyer Din Ratri" (1969), "Ashani Sanket" (1973), "Sonar Kella" (1974), "Joi Baba Felunath" (1978), "Ghare Baire" (1984) and "Ganashatru" (1989).

Chatterjee received Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012.

He is also a Padma awardee, received the Padma Bhushan in 2004. Other awards include two National Film Awards, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and a Filmfare East award.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the actor over being conferred with the honour. She tweeted: "From Apur Sansar to Legion d Honour. The legendary Shri Soumitra Chattopadhay, hallmark of Indian and Bengali cinema... 1/2."

"A tribute and honour to the great actor of Bengali cinema by France. This makes us very proud. Congratulations 2/2," she said.

Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee said: "Soumitra Kaku u r a true inspiration..Pronam for #Legion of honour..2nd person from our industry after Ray to b honoured..Respect ."

Actress Rituparna Sengupa also wished the actor and posted: "Proud to have played your daughter on screen. Thanks for making #BengaliCinema proud by winning the Légion d'Honneur Soumitra kaku."

Filmmaker Atanu Ghosh said: "Privileged that we got to live and work with him. Hearty congratulations Sir, for the coveted Légion d'Honneur #SoumitraChatterjee."

Actor Abir Chatterjee posted: "Such a proud moment for all of us #SoumitraChatterjee getting the much coveted Legion d'Honneur!you are an inspiration.congratulations."

Actor Tota Roy Choudhury wished the actor and said: "The crown-jewel of Bangla cinema, Shri Soumitra Chatterjee has been awarded the highest French award, Légion d'Honneur. CONGRATULATIONS, Sir ."
