Srijit Mukherji and his 'Byomkesh' team grace trailer launch of Dev's 'Byomkesh o Durgo Rahosyo'

Kolkata/IBNS: The Bengali film industry is witnessing a clash of two projects based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's novel 'Durgo Rahasya' across different media.

While Tollywood superstar-producer Dev starrer 'Byomkesh o Durgo Rahosyo'- directed by Birsa Dasgupta- is coming to big screens on August 11, filmmaker Srijit Mukherji's Hoichoi web series 'Durgo Rawhoshyo' is yet to get a release date.

In a very rare picture from the regional film industry which is often accused of lacking unity, Srijit, his onscreen 'Byomkesh' Anirban Bhattacharya, 'Satyabati' Sohini Sarkar and others graced the trailer launch of 'Byomkesh o Durgo Rahosyo'.

Quite impressed by the trailer, Srijit said, "I loved it. I have always felt 'Durgo Rahasya' is the most cinematic story of Byomkesh. It deserves a canvas and a cinematic treatment like this.

"It has been made possible because of Dev becoming Byomkesh and his larger-than-life image helping the larger-than-life canvas."

Anirban, an actor-director who played Byomkesh even in the past, felt Dev's physique makes him unique among contemporary actors who have portrayed the famous Bengali onscreen sleuth.

"Since the announcement of Dev as Byomkesh, I found it interesting because of the feature. The contemporary actors, who have played Byomkesh, are more or less similar in terms of feature. Dev's features are distinct."

"Since Sharadindu-babu had no sketch of Byomkesh, the sleuth will have a new physical structure in the form of Dev," said Anirban at the trailer launch.

Among the contemporaries, Abir Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Jisshu U Sengupta apart from Anirban have essayed Byomkesh onscreen across various platforms.

Acting legend Uttam Kumar played Byomkesh in Satyajit Ray's 'Chiriakhana', which was released in 1967.

'Durgo Rahasya', the adventure detective novel by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay, was published in 1952.

In this riveting tale, Byomkesh, accompanied by his trusted ally Ajit, finds himself entangled in the investigation of the untimely demise of Professor Ishan Chandra Majumder, believed to be caused by a snake bite.

Dev, who faced online trolling for playing Byomkesh, has already claimed 'Byomkesh o Durgo Rahosyo' could become his first and last film on the subject unless he gets motivated to play it in future.

Faintly touching on the trolling, Dev on Thursday highlighted himself as a "risk-taker" saying, "I love to deconstruct myself. People who are close to me know how much I crave for better films. I was afraid of this film because I was aware of getting criticised despite giving all my hard work."

"My quest is to prove myself without paying attention to the criticisms," the leading Tollywood actor added.

Dev's actress girlfriend Rukmini Maitra plays Satyabati while actor Ambarish Mukherjee is Ajit in the film.

'Byomkesh o Durgo Rahosyo' is co-produced by Shadow Films and Dev Entertainment Ventures.
