Aussie skipper Steven Smith's IPL stint cut short by injury

Mumbai, May 2 (IBNS) Australian skipper and an important member for the IPL Pune franchise, Steven Smith's IPL tournament has ended prematurely for this season, owing to a wrist injury he picked up a week ago, reports said.

Smith is on his way back home, cricket.co.,au reported.

"We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this and unfortunately it has not resolved. As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment ahead of the Qantas Tour of the West Indies."

The Cricket Australia website stated that the injury is nothing serious but keeping in mind the their itinerary, they wanted Smith to take rest and get fit before the series with West Indies resumes.

"From the information we have so far, this doesn’t appear to be a serious injury but we are keen to give him the time to recover and rehabilitate before heading to the West Indies at the end of May," the website stated.

Smith is likely to be replaced by his compatriot Usman Khwaja in the top eleven, who was earlier named as Kevin Pieterson's replacement.
