Chess: Viswanathan Anand defeats Magnus Carlsen, picks up World Rapid Championship

Riyadh, Dec 29 (IBNS): Indian Chess grand master Viswanathan Anand defeated arch rival and reigning champion Magnus Carlsen to lift up of World Rapid Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday.

The Indian grand master registered his win in 34 moves.

Following his win, President Kovind took to Twitter to congratulate the legendary chess player.

"Congratulations Viswanathan Anand for winning the World Rapid Chess Championship. Such determined pursuit of excellence across decades makes you an inspiration for all of us. India is proud of you #PresidentKovind."

Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee too hailed Anand's achievement.

Heartiest congratulations to Vishwanathan Anand @vishy64theking for winning the World Rapid Chess Championship. We are proud of you," his tweet read.

Anand had earlier acknowledged the adulation and tweeted, "MoreThanks all!! Feeling is like floating. My head keeps playing the song... we are the champions! The words ring so true. More on this moment after the blitz!"
