New Delhi, Dec 3 (IBNS) Ajinkya Rahane finally notched up his maiden half-century as India surpassed their previous best score in the ongoing series to finish the first day with 231 runs for the loss of 7 wickets against South Africa here on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, India lost their wicket for 30 runs, but held on to add identical runs to share honors on the first session of the day.

Starting the second session at 60 for 1, the hosts were dealt a double blow as the Proteas picked up 2 wickets in quick succession to leave them reeling at 66 for 3.

Virat Kohli, who had a modest series so far, looked his best as the Indian skipper flicked and drove with ease before being caught by Dane Vilas for 44.

Kohli's dismissal was unique as the ball hit the man at short fine leg and bubbled up, only for the wicket-keeper to dive and complete a fine catch.

Kohli and Rahane was also involved in a 70-run partnership for the 4th wicket.

Rahane then lost two partners early in Rohit Sharma (1) and Wriddhiman Saha (1) but formed another significant partnership of 59 runs for the 7th wicket, with Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja in his knock of 24, hit some fine boundaries as he drove JP Duminy for two consecutive balls.

Rahane forged another 33 runs unbeaten partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin (6) for the 8th wicket before play was called off early, due to bad lights.

For South Africa, Dane Piedt, playing his second Test, picked up 4 wickets for 101 runs, while the other three were captured by Kyle Abbott for 23 runs. Though Morne morkel failed to get a wicket, he bowled a tight spell in the morning session.
