Fourth Test: Virat misses out on a ton, double delight for Rahane
New Delhi, Dec 6 (IBNS) Virat Kohli failed to score the 17 runs needed for his 12th Test century, but Ajinkya Rahane scored yet another century to enter the record books as they set a mammoth 481 runs target for South Africa after declaring at 267 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, here on Sunday, the fourth day of the fourth Test of the inaugural Freedom Series.
Chasing 481 runs for an unlikely win, the Proteas have lost an early wicket yet again as Ashwin enticed Dean Elgar (4) into a drive, thus inducing an edge that was caught by Rahane who was standing at first slip.
Earlier in the day, Rahane started off with some thumping drive while his partner Virat Kohli was a bit cautious, nearing a hundred. Adding just 5 runs to his overnight score, Kohli (88) finally succumbed to a ball from Abbott that kept low and had him trapped in front.
Rahane who took around 100 balls to score his first 20 runs, hit 3 sixes in the morning to up the ante and got to the three figure mark playing 206 balls. With the century, the 6th of his career, Rahane became the 5th Indian after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli to score centuries in both the innings of a Test match.
After a 154-run partnership with Virat Kohli for the fifth wicket, Rahane put up another 50 plus partnership for the ensuing wicket with Wriddhiman Saha, who remained unbeaten on 23 runs.
For South Africa Morne Morkel was the pick of the bowlers, having picked up 3 out of the 5 Indian wickets. Imran Tahir and Kyle Abbott picked up one each.
