Gurkirat Singh clinches Tata Steel Royal Juniors Challenge 2014

Kolkata, July 3 (IBNS): Local lad Gurkirat Singh showcased his dominance for the second day running to card a two-over 74 at the Par-72 Royal Calcutta Golf Club to clinch the Tata Steel Royal Juniors Challenge 2014 by three strokes, completing 5 legs of the Tata Steel East Zone Feeder and Sub-Junior Tour.

Jamshedpur’s Rohit Kumar Bouri came in with the best card of the day of even-par 72 to claim second place at a gross of seven-over par 151 followed by RCGC’s Udayjit Bhalotia two strokes behind at nine-over par 153.

Gurkirat, who began the day three strokes ahead made a solid start rolling in five consecutive pars before a birdie 3 on the 6th hole stretched his lead before it was cut a stroke when he made a bogey on the 7th. Another dropped stroke on the 9th had him turn at a gross of three-over par. He began the back nine with a hat trick of pars and was well on his way to complete a comfortable three-stroke victory despite a mistake on the 13th. He came in with a second consecutive card of two-over par 74 for a gross of four-over 148.

Bibek Sardar surged from his overnight third place to clinch the category B title by making two birdies and six bogeys on his way to a round of four-over 76 for the day and a gross of twelve-over 156. Devansh Chadha finished second one stroke behind when he carded a five-over 77 followed by Manish Rajak a further six strokes behind at a gross score of nineteen-over 163.

Overnight leader Anisha Agarwalla coasted to a sixteen stroke lead over Girls Category B winner Susnata Deb by following up her first round 89 with a solid 85 for a gross of thirty-over 174.

In a thrilling finish for the Boys Category C, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav edged out Rajib Ali on the 3rd playoff hole after both were locked at nine-over 153 at the end of the 36 regulation holes. Rajib, who was trailing Sandeep by two strokes overnight made up with a charge on the front nine with Sandeep struggling to lead by two strokes going out. Sandeep gathered momentum with a string of pars to peg back two strokes and carried it into the play off holes to clinch the 45 points.

Chitrangada Singh won the Girls Category C while Tarushi Jain was the winner of Girls Category D. Kaushal Bagrodia managed to edge out Arav Sanghavi by two strokes and emerge victorious of Boys Category D
