'I don't want to be a burden, but a solution,' says Barca manager Xavi, stepping down as coach

Barcelona/IBNS: FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez announced that he will step down at the end of the season.

On Saturday, shortly after Barcelona's 5-3 loss to Villarreal in the Spanish league La Liga left them 10 points behind leaders Real Madrid, Xavi made his announcement.

"I want to announce that on June 30 I will no longer continue as the coach at Barca. I think the situation needs to change course, and as a culer, I cannot allow the current situation," said Xavi in a news conference.

"I've been a man of the Club. I've prioritized it above even myself. I've given everything I have. And I will continue to do so to make the fans feel proud.

"I don't want to be a burden at all. I want to be a solution," said Xavi about his decision.

"As a culer, the best thing is to leave the club after June. I think that will help the dynamic change and I still think that we can have a very good season. I have to think about the club before myself," said the 2010 World Cup winner.

"I will not change my mind even if we win the Champions League," said Xavi.

"At least you won't judge me anymore, as you already know that I'm leaving in a few months. Everything will be calmer."

For the remainder of his contract year, Xavi has waived his entire salary, he said, adding that he has no desire to hurt the club.

The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder returned to his former club, Barcelona, as the new manager on November 6, 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman on a contract until June 2024.

Following his arrival, Xavi implemented stricter rules for the players, which included the re-introduction of fines, early arrival for training and tracking of players' off-pitch activities.

Barcelona is currently looking for a new manager.
