India found themselves in trouble as Murali Vijay (3), KL Rahul (10) and Cheteshwar Pujara (1) departed early with the scorecard reading 3-40.
Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane (22*) came out with determination to save India from the situation as both the batsmen posted 58 runs in the fourth wicket partnership.

These two players will resume proceedings on Saturday.
England were earlier bowled out for 255 runs.
Jonny Bairstow (53) and Joe Root (53) remained the top scorer for the side.
R Ashwin clicked again by picking up five wickets for India.
