National Games: Punjab wins nail-biting final to clinch gold

The 37th National Games held in the picturesque state of Goa witnessed an electrifying showdown in men’s basketball as Punjab emerged victorious, clinching the gold medal.

The Punjab Men’s Basketball Team, amidst roaring cheers from their fans and an atmosphere charged with anticipation, triumphed over Tamil Nadu in the final match, with a final score of 105-103.

The thrilling 5×5 format game kept spectators on the edge of their seats and etched a memorable chapter in the history of Indian basketball.

The joy resonating from the Punjab Basketball fraternity was palpable, and it was a moment of immense pride for the players, coaches, and supporters.

The Punjab team’s players and coaches received a shower of congratulations and appreciation from the senior executives of the Punjab Basketball Association (PBA).

The PBA’s President, R S Gill DGP Retd., along with key members including Yurinder Singh Hayer, Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, J P Singh, Parminder S Bhandal, Parminder Singh Heer, and international player Gurjit Singh Romana, came forward to honor and congratulate the team on their remarkable achievement.

The Punjab Men’s Basketball Team had previously secured a bronze medal in the 3×3 category, and this achievement was also lauded and celebrated.

Teja Singh Dhaliwal, the General Secretary of PBA, known as LohPursh of PBA, emphasized the months of relentless effort put in by the dedicated coaches, Rajinder Singh of Ludhiana Basketball Academy and Gurkirpal Singh Dhillon of PPA.

It was their guidance and hard work that played a pivotal role in shaping the players into a spirited and coordinated team.

Parminder Singh Heer, who accompanied the team, expressed his admiration for the team’s performance in the final match, describing it as “superb” and “outstanding.”

The execution of the game plan and composure under pressure were indeed commendable. Arjuna Awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema also extended his warm congratulations to the teams for their incredible success.

The executives of the Ludhiana Basketball Association, including Arshpreet Singh Mundi, Avinsih Manu, Brij B. Goyal, and Richu Sharma, announced their plans to organize a grand welcome for the victorious players upon their return to Ludhiana from Goa.

The enthusiasm and support for the players in Punjab are at an all-time high, with the entire state celebrating their victory.

With the spotlight firmly on Punjab, the basketball world eagerly anticipates the 73rd Nationals, which are set to take place in Ludhiana in December.

The Punjab Men’s Basketball Team is gearing up to once again take center stage, this time with the goal of winning gold in the Seniors Men Championships.

The anticipation is building, and all eyes are on the team as they prepare to continue their incredible journey in the world of Indian basketball.
