Auckland, Mar 3 (IBNS) Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe, who was suffering from cancer, breathed his last here on Thursday.

He was suffering from lymphoma for the second time. In 2012 he was given an all clear certificate but it returned two years later in 2014.

Crowe is regarded as one of the best Kiwi batsman. He also served as a commentator and authored books.

A promising young batsman, in 1985 he was named one of the Wisden Cricketer of the Year.

He also picked up the Man of the Tournament in the 1992 World Cup, amassing more than 450 runs in nine matches.

Upon his demise, the New Zealand cricket body tweeted: "New Zealand Cricket is deeply saddened at the passing of our country’s greatest batsman, Martin David Crowe, aged 53."

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming tweeted: "Very sad to hear of the passing of martin crowe this morning. An inspiration to me and so many others. One of our true greats. RIP hogan."

Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones said, "Just heard the news of Martin Crowe's passing. Brilliant player and ambassador for our game. Sympathies to Jeff and the family."
