New Zealand moves to third in ICC Women's Championship
The White Ferns went into the series in sixth position on eight points, but has now leapfrogged Pakistan, England and South Africa to third on 14 points, two behind co-leaders Australia, which lies marginally ahead of the West Indies when run-rates are factored in.
India has switched places with Sri Lanka who are now rooted to the bottom of the table on five points.
In the remaining two fourth round matches, to be played in February 2016, leaders Australia will host India while South Africa will welcome England.
The White Ferns, in fact, swept Sri Lanka 5-0 in the series but only the first three matches counted towards the ICC Women’s Championship. The 5-0 series win, nevertheless, has had an impact on New Zealand position on the ICC Women’s Team Rankings on which it has gained two points to move up to 111 points.
The ICC Women’s Championship is a qualifying tournament for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 and is being participated in by Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The top four sides from the ICC Women’s Championship will gain automatic qualification for the event proper which is to be staged in England, while the bottom four sides will get a final chance of qualification through the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in 2017.
The tournament structure sees each team will play each other in one home or away series that will include three ODIs over a two and a half year period. As such, each side is guaranteed at least 21 ODIs over the tournament period.
Speaking after the series, White Ferns Suzie Bates captain said: “We’re really pleased with the way we played and dominated. To come out and win 5-0, and the way we performed with a few 10-wicket wins, was really pleasing ahead of the start of our summer.
“The whole series we’ve had different players stand up with personal bests, from Rachel Priest to Morna Nielsen to Erin Bermingham, so it’s really nice to be able to take some time now to enjoy that and celebrate those achievements.”
Sri Lanka captain Shashikala Siriwardene commented: “When we arrived in New Zealand we were seventh in the table and had hoped to grab a few points. But unfortunately as a team we couldn’t perform as we expected.
“Conditions were the biggest challenge firstly and this was the first time we all played here. We were also short of few experienced players like Eshani and Udeshika. But we learned a lot and thanks to ICC Women’s Championship, we have the opportunity to play against best seven countries in the world. We gained good experience and I am sure we will be tougher for the experience next time.”
As a consequence of the five ODIs, in the latest ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings for Batters, right-hander Bates has moved up four places to join England’s Sarah Taylor in second position after a prolific series with the bat where she scored 38, 70 not out, 80 and 70 not out in four innings overall.
Bates now trails Australia’s Meg Lanning by 79 points and has been joined in the top 10 by wicket-keeper Rachel Priest who has rocketed 11 places to a career-high ninth position after scoring 108, 51 not out and 157 in just three innings.
Sri Lanka opener Chamari Jayangani has moved up four places to 12th, while other notable upward movers include Katie Perkins (up one to a career-high 24th), Sara McGlashan (up nine to 32nd) and wicket-keeper Prasadani Weerakoddy (up four to 61st).
In the ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings for Bowlers, the top 10 remains unchanged with India’s Jhulan Goswami continuing to lead the way.
However, there were gains for Sophie Devine (up 12 places to 21st), Bates (up eight to a career-high 24th), Lea Tahuhu (up one to 29th) and a career-high 30th for leg-spinner Erin Bermingham who is the highest mover in the top 50 and has moved up 15 places after claiming 10 wickets for 101 runs in five matches.
There were significant gains for Amy Satterthwaite (up six to 66th) and career-high gains for Anna Peterson (up 19 to 68th), Hannah Rowe (up 44 to 73rd), Ama Kanchana (up four to 87th) and Jayangani (up 19 to 90th).
Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies continues to lead the all-rounders’ tables, however there were career high gains for Bates, who has moved up two places to a career-high third, as well as New Zealand’s Devine who has moved up one place to sixth on 245 points.
