Rio: Jitu Rai reaches 10m Air Pistol final

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (IBNS): Indian shooter Jitu Rai on Saturday qualified for the 10m Air Pistol Men's finals event of the Rio Olympics here.

The shooter, who is being considered as one of the strongest medal hopes for the nation, qualified for the final of the event in sixth place by shooting 580 points in the qualification stage.

He hit six series.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel wished him and tweeted: "Congratulations to Jitu Rai for qualifying for 10m Men's Air Pistol. Make India Proud. #KheloIndia #RioOlympics2016."

However, India met with disappointment as  shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul failed to qualify in the finals of the  women's 10m air rifle event.

While Chandela, scoring 411.6, finished 34th, Ayonika ended at the 43rd position with a score of 407.

In table tennis, Romania's Daniela Monteiro Dodan defeated  Mouma Das in the first round clash 11-2, 11-7, 11-7, 11-3.

In another disappointing finish, Manika Batra was defeated by Poland's Katarzyna Grzybowska-Franc 12-10, 6-11, 12-14, 11-8, 4-11, 12-14.
