Sourav Ganguly expresses 'deep sense of worry' about Indian cricket

Kolkata, Oct 31 (IBNS): Former Indian cricket captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly has recently expressed his "deep sense of worry" about the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which he feels is in "danger", media reports said.

Terming the Indian cricket as rudderless, Ganguly said the BCCI is taking decisions in a confused manner.

He also said the differences within the two-member Cricket of Administrators (CoA) over the sexual harassment allegations leveled against BCCI CEO Rahul Johri has affected the image of the cricket board.

"Indian Cricket with its massive following has been built over the years of (sic) hard work from superb administrators and greatest of cricketers ... I at the present moment, think its in danger. I hope people are listening," Ganguly said in a letter to the BCCI, according to The Times of India.

After the #MeToo allegations leveled at Johri, the two members of the CoA have differed in their opinions.

While CoA head Vinod Rai has set up an independent committee to probe the matter, Diana Edulji, another member, is in favour of sacking Johri immediately.

Ganguly has also expressed his anguish over the selection of former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the national team.

He said: "Cricketing rules are changed in the middle of a season, which has never been heard of. Decisions made in committees are turned around with complete disrespect, my experience in the matter of coach selection was appalling," the former skipper has been quoted by The Times Of India.

In 2016, after a public rift between then head coach Anil Kumble and Indian skipper Virat Kohli, the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), of which Ganguly is a part along with former greats Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, went along with their job of coach selection.

Though the committee did not propose any name initially, the BCCI had dramatically announced the name of Shastri as the head coach. Though the CAC had included former Indian captain Rahul Dravid and ex-pace bowler Zaheer Khan in the national team in distinct roles, the decision was overruled.
