Veteran mountaineer and adventurer Amulya Sen passes away
Kolkata, June 1 (IBNS): Veteran mountaineer and adventurer Amulya Sen breathed his last at his south Kolkata residence on Friday late night following a cardiac arrest.
Sen, who was in his early 80s, is survived by his wife and a daughter.
Sen’s love for mountaineering grew after he successfully attended the basic and advance mountaineering courses at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute Darjeeling during 1960 and 1961.
He was the leader of Nilgiri Parvat expedition in Garhwal Himalaya which was organized by Himalayan Association of Kolkata and made the first ascent of the peak in 1962.
He also participated in pre-Everest expeditions to Panchachulli led by Flt Lt A K Chowdhury in Kumun Himalaya and Mt. Rathong , led by Col B S Jaiswal in Sikkim Himalaya during 1964. He made the first Indian ascent of Chandra Parvat in an expedition led by Flying Officer M K M Raju in 1965. He was also leader of an expeditions to Mt Everest which was organized by an organization in West Bengal during 1993.
Sen, who retired as Public Relations Officer of West Bengal State Legislative Assembly, attended the first “ Method of Instruction” course along with legendary Tenzing Norgay which was held at HMI, Darjeeling .
He also acted as an Instructor at the first Adventure Course for the teen agers in India which was also organised by HMI, Darjeeling.
In later years Sen led scores of expeditions from West Bengal to various mountains in Indian Himalaya and many rock climbing and adventure camps in West Bengal.
He served as secretary of East Zone Committee of Indian Mountaineering Foundation ( IMF )and Director of West Bengal Chapter of National Adventure Foundation (NAF).
Sen also acted as Advisor to West Bengal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Foundation ( WBMASF) under Youth Services Department of Government of West Bengal. He also served as a member in the Governing Council of IMF and Executive Council of HMI, Darjeeling.
Sen was decorated with National Adventure Award ( now known as Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award ) by Government of India , Tenzing Award by Government of West Bengal and Life Time Achievement Awards by different organizations for his contributions to mountaineering and adventure sports in the country.
Amulyada, as Sen is known to young and old alike, was dear to all for his amiable nature. A pal of gloom descended among the mountaineering and adventure fraternity as news of his demise got spread this morning.
A large number of mountaineers and adventure lovers including representatives of IMF , NAF, WBMASF and various mountaineering clubs in the city gathered at his cremation this forenoon to pay their regards to the departed soul.
