Virender Sehwag quits international cricket

The announcement brought to close a remarkable career in which Sehwag scored 17,253 runs across formats in international cricket. Sehwag, who made his international debut in 1999, in an ODI against Pakistan in Mohali, bows out of cricket having played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is.

He remains the only Indian batsman to have recorded two triple centuries, one against Pakistan (309 in Multan) and the other against South Africa (319 in Chennai).

BCCI President Shashank Manohar said, “Virender Sehwag has had a long and illustrious career. Over the years he has been a great example for his peers and youngsters alike. He has given cricket lovers across the globe a lot of joy with his unique style of batting. He was one of the most feared batsmen. Here’s wishing him the best in the future.”

Anurag Thakur, BCCI Honorary Secretary, said, “I want to congratulate Viru (Virender Sehwag) on a fantastic career. He redefined batting and brought so many laurels to the country. He was like India’s very own Sir Viv Richards who would tear bowling attacks to bits. He leaves the game as one of our all-time greats and a role model to young Indians on what all one can achieve through dedication. I wish him the very best for all his future endevours.”

The world of cricket expressed their thoughts over Sehwag's decision to quit cricket on social networking sites.

Australian batsman David Warner tweeted: "Well done on your career legend. Been a privilege to play with and against you. Catch up soon. @virendersehwag ."

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli said: "Pleasure to have played with you @virendersehwag bhai. What an amazing career. Thanks for the guidance and the memories. Modern day legend!"

Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan, who announced his retirement from cricket recently, tweeted:"Clear thinking n attacking stroke play is been hallmark of ur batting! thank u @virendersehwag for grt memories & wonderful friendship!!"

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman posted: "Congrats bratha @virendersehwag on a fabulous career.A pure entertainer who gave us sooo much joy . Thanks for all the gr8 memories.#LEGEND."

Sehwag's opening partner for long time, Gautam Gambhir tweeted: "@virendersehwag who forced manufacturers to come up with crowd helmets...and still never missed the singles. Will miss you from d other end."

Spinner R Ashwin said: "Clear thinking and entertainment were things he used as his weapon.A thorough entertainer,congrats on a wonderful career @virendersehwag ."

Harbhajan Singh, Indian spinner who has played with Sehwag for a long time, tweeted: "Salute salute salute Salute to the Legend @virendersehwag wish you and family the best for future. Go well brother."

Indian player Suresh Raina said: "The legend I played with. The miracle I had the fortune of knowing. The most spectacular ever. Will miss u @virendersehwag."
