Maldives: First case of Omicron detected

Male, Dec 7 (UNI/Xinhua) Maldives has recorded its first case of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus, local media reported Tuesday.

Authorities in the Maldives have so far vaccinated over 37,000 workers who are employed in the country’s tourism sector, according to Raajje TV. The sector forms the backbone of the archipelago’s economy and the inoculation drive would help improve the recovery.

Maldives plans to legalise shark fishing

The Maldives, whose tourism-dependent economy has been hit hard by the pandemic,  is planning to end the ban on shark fishing and turn it into a lucrative enterprise. This was announced by the Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed, who said that discussions are underway to open up shark fishing as a managed fisheries sector.
