Ringing the curtains down on an era of Bengali cinema, National award-winning filmmaker Tarun Majumdar, whose films used to bridge the gap between mainstream entertainers and serious content for nearly half a century, passed away on Monday in a city hospital. He was 91.

Indo-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, whose film Fire had stirred a controversy in the late 1990s for depicting lesbianism, was the guest at Ek Mulakat Visesh organised by Prabha Khaitan Foundation and presented by Shree Cement. Her latest film is Funny Boy, set in Sri Lanka during the violent Tamil-Sinhalese conflict telling the story of a  young boy and his sexual awakening. He also takes ‘brief breaks’ into what he terms as ‘socially conscious’ cinema. The prolific director in conversation with Shoma A. Chatterji on his yet to be released films like Sila Samayangalil which is about AIDS and the stigma surrounding it.
