UN experts call on Iran to repeal strict new hijab law

Iranian women and girls now face prison terms of up to 15 years and possible death sentences for failing to wear a hijab, through a new strict law on religious dress and behaviour that was due to take effect on Friday.

A group of UN Human Rights Council-appointed experts expressed their grave concern on Friday over a new draft law in Iran sanctioning new punishments for women and girls who fail to wear the headscarf, or hijab, in public.

Tehran/IBNS: Taraneh Alidoosti, who acted in the 2016 Oscar-winning film "The Salesman", was arrested for supporting the anti-hijab protest in Iran, AFP reported citing Tasnim news agency.
