Kabul/UNI: Thirty-six Taliban militants joined a national peace and reconciliation process in two Afghan provinces after they surrendered before the national authorities, TOLO news reported on Monday.

In western Badghis province, 22 Taliban insurgents lead by Hekmatullah Khan laid down their arms and joined the national reconciliation process, office of provincial National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement.

The insurgents handed over a handful of weapons and fire arms to the officials of NDS, the national intelligence agency of the country.

In another case in eastern Nangarhar province, 14 Taliban militants surrendered before the provincial NDS department along with 14 rounds of fire arms and heavy weapons, a statement from provincial government said.

The Afghan government established a High Council for National Reconciliation in May this year to encourage Taliban militants to disarm and give up militancy against the government and join the mainstream.

The Taliban has not yet officially responded to the government overture.
