Kabul: Commander of the US CENTCOM and of the residual US forces in Kabul General Kenneth F. McKenzie on Sunday visited Kabul city where he met President Ashraf Ghani to discuss the security situation and US support for the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

Other participants at the meeting included First Vice-President Amrullah Saleh, NSA Hamdullah Mohib, and US Charge d’Affaires in Kabul Ross Wilson.

After the meeting, General McKenzie confirmed that the US had recently increased airstrikes against the Taliban, and was prepared to continue those.

Terming the battle for Kandahar city as a “tough fight”, McKenzie emphasised that while the city had not fallen yet, its control was ‘critical’ for both sides.

Separately, media reports, citing unidentified US officials stated that the recent resumption of US airstrikes against the Taliban was to halt the outfit’s offensives in Helmand and Kandahar Provinces.
