Mogadishu/IBNS: Terror group Al Shabab on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack in Somalia capital Mogadishu last week that claimed over 80 lives.

" In unexpected move, #Shabaab takes responsibility for deadly bombing Sat in Mogadishu, which killed 79+, many of whom Muslims. Clearly backed into a corner, Shabaab released a statement & speech by its spokesman attempting to justify it," Director of SITE Intelligence Group Rita Katz tweeted.

The blast occurred at a checkpoint at a busy intersection in the capital city.

Al-Shabab militants have often carried out attacks in the city.
