Albanian police arrest 50 people after violent anti-gov't protest
Tirana, May 13 (Xinhua/UNI) Albanian State Police announced on Sunday that 50 people were arrested for violent acts during Saturday's opposition protest.
According to the State Police statement, the arrests were made for criminal offences of "opposing police order", "hitting someone while on duty", "disturbing public order", "destroying property through arson" and "Breach of rules regarding explosives".
"Opposition supporters caused considerable damage to the Prime Minister's office, the Parliament's headquarters, the Interior Ministry, as well as to other public and private subjects," the statement reads.
Meanwhile, an investigation group is working on the identification of other suspects involved in illegal actions during the violent protest.
The State Police also reported that 16 police officers were injured during the protest.
At the end of Saturday's protest, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party Lulzim Basha announced that the protests would continue and called on his supporters and citizens to join the next anti- government protest on Monday evening.
Since mid-February, the opposition parties in Albania have launched a series of rallies. Opposition lawmakers have resigned from their seats in the parliament to put more pressure on the ruling Socialist Party, which they accuse of being corrupt and linked to organized crime.
