Bloodshed at Sydney's Bondi Beach: 10 killed as gunmen open fire during Jewish event

| @indiablooms | Dec 14, 2025, at 03:53 pm

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured after two gunmen opened fire at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday, where a Jewish community event was scheduled to take place, authorities said.

The New South Wales (NSW) Police Force confirmed that two people have been taken into custody following the shooting.

“Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area,” police said in a post on X.

Some uncofnirmed social media post showed an unarmed man pouncing on one of the shooters who was hiding behind a tree.

According to local media reports, a ‘Chanukah by the Sea’ event had been scheduled at the venue. Chanukah, also known as Hanukkah, is an eight-day Jewish festival of lights.

Eyewitness accounts

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and desperation as people attempted to shield children from the attackers. Some reportedly used benches for cover while fleeing the area.

Heather Nolan, who was sheltering in a changing room at Bondi Beach, told ABC that she used a wooden bench to protect her children.

“There was a wooden bench. I moved it and put my kids behind the bench. Then someone came and sat down next to us who was bleeding,” she said.

“I don’t know what happened to him because somebody opened the door to the change room and ushered people inside,” Nolan added.

Another eyewitness told the broadcaster that he did everything he could to shield his family before running from the scene. He said the shooting lasted for about 10 minutes, describing the experience as “absolute hell on Earth.”

Prime Minister reacts

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing.”

“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” Albanese said in a statement.

“My thoughts are with every person affected. I have spoken with the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier. We are working closely with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed,” he added, urging people in the area to follow official police advisories.
