Calgary campaigns for road safety

| | Nov 14, 2016, at 02:35 am
Calgary, Nov 13 (IBNS): As the nights in winter are getting longer and days shorter in this part of the world (as daylight is available only for eight hours or even less for the day) the City of Calgary appealed to the Calgarians to think about their own safety while on road during this time of the year.

In Calgary City Blog news Tony Churchill, the leader of traffic safety commented "Pedestrians injury collision are consistently the  highest during the month of November and this  is due to factors such as increased hours of darkness, late morning and early evening sun glare, and the time change.”

Aiming at reduction of road accidents and better intersection safety management, the City of Calgary in collaboration with the Alberta Health Services, Alberta Motor Association and traffic safety partners, through education, enforcement and engineering strategies had been trying to bring down the number and severity of pedestrian collisions on one hand and to improve intersection safety in Calgary, onthe other hand.

The main drive was launched through “Look out at each other" safety campaign which reminded the citizens about their shared responsibility while being on the road.

Setting this campaign as a target to ensure road safety the City of Calgary came up with some steps for all to follow while travelling on the road.

People who drive

Never drive distracted - put away cellphones and other distractions. Stop for all pedestrians crossing in a crosswalk- it's a law.

Ensure proper visibility of your vehicle. Make sure your windshield and highlights are clean and don't obstruct your view.

Drive at a safe speed and be aware of pedestrian activity around you. Never pass a vehicle at crosswalk. Make eye contact with the people crossing intersection.

People crossing the road

Unplug headphones while crossing roads, don't use cellphones at intersection and keep eye contact with approaching drivers to ensure that driver sees you.

Peep around stopped cars while crossing the intersections to ensure other vehicles are not coming.
