Canada becomes second nation to legalise recreational cannabis

Ottawa, Oct 17 (IBNS): Canada has become the second country to legalise the use of recreational marijuana (recreational cannabis) across the nation on Wednesday, media reports said.

Uruguay was the first country to legalise recreational cannabis.

According to BBC, the first recreational cannabis (which was to be legally bought) was purchased at midnight on Wednesday. It was bought on the island of Newfoundland.

Canadian adults will be allowed to possess around 30 grams of dried cannabis in public. Exceeding the limit will be deemed illegal and will attract penalty.

The authorities have also stated that buying cannabis from unlicensed dealer or growing more than four plants per household will be treated as illegal.

A buyer will need to be at least 18 years or older to obtain it from licensed stores, while some Canadian provinces have set up the age limit to 19. You won’t have legal problems in getting high-quality products as long as you’re of legal age.

Cannabis-infused foods will not be available now, but is expected to take a year from the time the bill comes into effect. Within this gap, the government is expected to set up the system.

Several farmers in British Columbia (BC), a Canadian province, are planning to switch their crops to cannabis.

Michael DeGiglio, who has already converted some potato greenhouses to cannabis facility, told CTV News, "If you track the price of vegetables ... the price has always gone down."

"The potential for profitability is much greater."
