Canada: Federal government planning to announce new statutory holiday

Ottawa, Aug 15 (IBNS): The federal government of Canada is planning to announce a new statutory holiday in the country, media reports said.

The holiday will mark Canada's destructive residential school legacy.

CTV News reported that the federal government is consulting the indigenous groups ahead of the declaration of the new holiday.

Simon Ross, a spokesperson for Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez told CTV News, "We have committed to fulfilling all of the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

"Call to Action 80 asks the Government of Canada to establish a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the survivors of Residential Schools. That’s exactly what we will do, and we will do that in partnership with Indigenous Peoples."

At the present moment, Canada has five national statutory holidays and they are Christmas Day, Canada Day, New Year's Day, Labour Day and Good Friday.

For the recognisation of the new stat holiday, laws in each province will have to be changed.
