Canada PM Trudeau hits out at Putin over Finland Summit with Trump
Ottawa, July 17 (IBNS): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has hit out at Russian President Vladimir Putin over his Finland Summit with US counterpart Donald Trump, media reports said.
Trudeau said Canada strongly opposes several actions taken by the Russian government under the rule of Putin including the annexation of Crimea, its support for Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad and rebels in eastern Ukraine.
He also said Canada is opposed to Russia's use of chemical weapons in Britain.
The PM said his country fully supports several eastern European nations like Latvia, where he had recently visited prior to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Summit.
However, Trudeau didn't utter a single word on Donald Trump, who is having strenuous relationship with the former for quite sometime now.
Trudeau and Trump are opposed to each other over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks and also the imposition of taxes on imported goods by both the nations.
US President Donald Trump has come under fire from his countrymen, following comments that he has no reason to suspect a Russian interference in the US elections.
Trump made the observation during his debut bi-lateral dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland's capital Helsinki on Monday
When asked if he believes his own country's intelligence agency or Putin, pertaining to the election hacking claims, Trump said: "President Putin says it's not Russia. I don't see any reason why it would be."
He also blamed his predecessors for the US' troubled diplomacy with Moscow.
Ironically, the US administration under Trump, deported at least 60 Russian diplomats earlier this year, following the nerve agent attack on former Russian double spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, after the UK, where the incident took place, determined that a Novichok agent was used in the attempted murder and squarely blamed Russia for carrying out the attack.
Even through Moscow protested the move, Russia witnessed a surge in diplomat deportation as over 20 countries backed the US. Interestingly, the Trump administration also deported the highest number of Russian diplomats, among all other countries who took a similar approach.
The two leaders held a close door meeting which ran for over two hours.
