Quebec/IBNS: Quebec's increase in employment by 231,000 (+6.5 per cent) from April to May was the largest gain among Canada's provinces and recorded a recovery of nearly 30 per cent of the cumulative losses witnessed in March and April, according to the Labour Force Survey, May 2020, reported by Statistics Canada on June 5.

Headquartered in Canada and formed in 1971, Statistics Canada is a Canadian government agency that produces statistics to help better understand Canada, its population, resources, economy, society, culture and help form informed decisions.

The person responsible for Statistics Canada currently is Navdeep Bains, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development.

Quebec also experienced a decline of 6.6 percentage points to 19.3 per cent in the proportion of workers who worked less than half their usual work hours due to COVID-19.

The number of people who were on temporary layoffs also declined, pushing the province's unemployment rate down by 3.3 percentage points to 13.7 per cent.

The number of workers working from a location other than home increased from 60 per cent in April to 65 per cent in May.

Quebec's largest employment increases were seen in construction (+58,000), manufacturing (+56,000) and wholesale and retail trade (+54,000).

An increase in employment within the Montréal census metropolitan area was about 97,000 (+5.3%).
