Canada: Quebec school suspends student for wearing jersey in class, later regrets

Quebec City, Apr 14 (IBNS): A Quebec school board on Friday expressed regret over an incident where a student, who wore a jersey and came to class to show tribute to the victims of Humboldt Broncos hockey team, was suspended, media reports said.

Philippe Volek (14) wore a jersey for the Jersey Day Event which was widely celebrated across the country on Friday.

He wore the jersey to show tribute to the dead victims.

The administration of the school met students on Friday to discuss the ways to show tribute to the deceased members of the Humboldt Broncos.

When the student was suspended for breaking the dress code of the school, he agreed to rather than taking off his jersey.

School Board director Bernard Dufourd told CBC News that Volek headed to his house instead of working with the school to organise the tribute event.

Dufourd also said the school would have reacted differently if it had a knowledge about the event.

He has been quoted by CBC News, "Had we known it was an event in all schools, we would have [participated] spontaneously."

"In the future [if something similar occurs], we'll question the student more carefully and inform ourselves in regards to the information he gives us."

Nationwide, employees or students have turned out in sports jerseys in their offices or schools to show solidarity with the victims of the deadly crash which occurred in Saskatchewan last week.

Sixteen people including Humboldt Broncos head coach, Darcy Haugan, have been killed as a bus carrying the junior hockey team crashed with a truck in Saskatchewan highway on Apr 6.

The victims include players Adam Herold, Connor Lukan, Evan Thomas, Jacob Leicht, Jaxon Joseph, Logan Boulet, Logan Hunter, Logan Schatz, Stephen Wack, Parker Tobin, team personnel Brody Hinz, Darcy Haugan, Glen Doerksen, Mark Cross and Tyler Beiber.

The team was on its way to Game 5 of a semi-final against the Nipawin Hawks, also in Saskatchewan, when the crash occurred around 5 pm a week ago.
