Beijing, May 7 (IBNS): At least 31 people went missing after two fishing boats capsized and one lost contact off east China coast, media reports said on Saturday.

"A fishing boat from east China's Shandong Province sunk in the East China Sea Saturday after being rammed by a cargo ship, leaving 17 crew members missing," China's Xinhua news agency reported.

The report on the mishap was first received by maritime and fishery bureau in the city of Weihai, reports said.

"An initial investigation showed that the local fishing boat with 19 on board was suspectedly hit by a Maltese cargo ship in the waters of the East China Sea" the news agency reported.

Two crew members have been saved following the mishap.

Ships from the maritime authorities are searching for the missing people.
