China's detention of Canadians is 'very concerning': Chrystia Freeland

Ottawa, Dec 15 (IBNS): Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has said China's detention of two Canadians is "very concerning".

Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat to China, and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur, were arrested on suspicion of posing threats to the security of China.

Addressing a press conference, Freeland said as quoted by CTV News, "We discussed China and the case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, building on a conversation that secretary Mike Pompeo and I began soon after her arrest.

"We all agree that the most important thing we can do is to uphold the rule of law, ensure that Ms. Meng’s right to due process is respected and that the current judicial process in Canada remains apolitical.

“We also discussed consular issues which are very concerning for Canada, the detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.”

Meanwhile, Canadian government officials have been granted access to one of the detained persons.
