Guanacaste, Jan 1 (IBNS): At least 12 people were reported dead after a plane crashed in Guanacaste province of Costa Rica.

The incident took place on Sunday after the single-engine plane carrying all 12 crashed that afternoon into a mountain near the Punta Islita Airport.

Authorities said that among the deceased were 10 Americans, five of whom were from the same family, and two Costa Rican pilots.

The family has been identified as the Steinbergs- Bruce and Irene , the parents, and their three sons, William, Zachary and Matthew.

Condoling the loss, Costa Rica's President, Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera, said in a Facebook post, "The government of Costa Rica deeply regrets the death of 10 American passengers and two Costa Rican pilots in the aircraft crash.”

Former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, who served as the head of the nation from 2010-2014, said on Twitter that one of the pilots killed was her cousin.
